Alex Magaña recently announced his candidacy for an at-large seat on the Denver Public Schools board, the seat currently held by Scott Esserman. While Esserman has made no official announcement, it is widely expected that he will vacate the at-large seat and run for the central Denver District 3 seat being vacated by term-limited board President Carrie Olson.
Magaña is a veteran DPS educator with more than 20 years in the district. He has been a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and leader of the Beacon Network of two southwest Denver middle schools.
He defies the “false binary” discussed in the recent post by Boardhawk columnist Dr. Aaron Massey. He is neither an “education reformer” nor a “defender of the status quo.” His many years of experience in schools give him a more nuanced view of the current state of pubic education, as his words on this podcast make clear.
Boardhawk hopes to have all candidates for all seats on the podcast at least once between now and the November election.
