Compass Academy Middle School in southwest Denver was supposed to open a high school beginning this fall. But when it became likely that a majority of the Denver school board would vote to close the middle school rather than allow the high school to open, school leaders and DPS officials reached a compromise last week: the middle school could remain open, but Compass would surrender the potion of its charter that allowed for opening a high school.
While Compass has struggled with student achievement, it has also been on the upswing over the past year.
