Podcast season 2, episode 16: What DPS’ 2026 annual demographics and enrollment report tells us about the district’s future

Denver Public Schools recently shared with the school board its annual Strategic Regional Analysis. The SRA details important data on enrollment trends, enrollment forecasting, inter-district movement of students, school choice  rates, academic performance, building utilization, boundary composition, and more. This report, alongside the budget, are foundational data sets for the board and community to better understand the short and long term financial health of the district (shout out to Cody Ostenson for this description).

There are many fascinating nuggets inside this dense report, and who better to help us understand them than Brian Eschbacher. Brian leads the Education Data Collective (EDC), a technology and consulting firm focused on supporting education leaders with long-term enrollment planning.

After starting his career in the private sector in management consulting, Brian has worked in education for 14 years.  He spent 7 years at Denver Public Schools as the Executive Director of Planning and School Choice. Among many other duties, he led production of the annual SRA. For the last seven years he has consulted a range of urban school districts, funders, and charter organizations on the intersection of demography and school choice.
