This new Colorado bill is needed because no federal law currently exists outlawing the practice across the country. Data from public schools telling the truth about seclusion is nonexistent, because most schools have not had to report on or conduct research about the practices and outcomes of using it.

Many Americans are embracing falsehoods about what is actually being taught in schools. Scholars also fear that this embrace of misinformation means that terms intended to help students develop as culturally proficient citizens will all be thrown into the bucket of “CRT.”

To continue the current, flawed approach to financial literacy education means maintaining economic inequities. All students, but especially  students of color and those not classified as having “high” social-economic status, need and deserve access to these courses. 

I learned then the importance of phonics instruction and the progression from sounds to words, to phrases, to sentences, to paragraphs, and so on. These foundational facts changed the way I approached teaching middle and high school. 

It is time to begin dismantling existing curriculum anchored in the overrepresentation of Eurocentric thought and perspective. Throughout history, prominent educators such as WEB DuBois, Carter G. Woodson, Paulo Freire and other philosophers of color developed ways for this kind of secondary and post-secondary education to be developed.
